What Are You Wearing Today?

Matthew 22:1–14 · Pungseonghan Gwangyeom Church

Today's passage tells the story of those invited to a king's banquet, and a man among them who lacked a wedding garment. Being invited is sheer grace, and those who have truly received that grace respond through their lives. As you return to your everyday routine, take this message with you and ponder it anew within your daily life and relationships.

1Married Couples

Question

Do you remember your initial heart when you first responded to the sacred invitation of marriage? Have there been moments recently where you casually overlooked your spouse's words and heart without paying attention?

Context

When entering marriage, we responded to each other with all our heart. Yet as time passes, when our spouse extends an invitation for conversation or shared time, we often dismiss it carelessly, saying, "Later," or "I'm busy right now." Our partner is still inviting us, but we may be treating that invitation far too lightly.

Scripture Link

Those invited in the text were also individuals who already had an established relationship with the king (v. 3). Yet, they responded to his repeated invitations with utter indifference. In our closest relationships, invitations are often the easiest to take for granted.

Confession

"I confess the moments I took the invitation of the person closest to me for granted and treated it with indifference. Enable me today to become someone who responds sincerely to that invitation once again."

Prayer Topic

May husband and wife never become indifferent to each other's invitations, growing into a relationship that renews its tender response day by day.

2Spouses with Different Faiths

Question

Are you treating your spouse, who has not yet stood together in faith, with impatience or a judgmental spirit?

Context

It is only natural to yearn for your spouse to receive the invitation into worship and faith. However, that earnest desire can sometimes drift into judgment: "Why are you still like this?" Today's text calls us not to evaluate another person's garment, but to examine our own.

Scripture Link

The word "For many are called, but few are chosen" was never spoken as a tool for evaluating others. It was an exhortation to reflect on oneself—standing directly before the King's invitation right now.

Confession

"Rather than harboring a judgmental heart toward my spouse, let me be someone who first bears witness to the grace of this invitation through my own life."

Prayer Topic

Until the day my spouse discovers God's calling for themselves, may I be the first to respond with a life worthy of His grace.

3Parents of Elementary Age or Younger

Question

Are you teaching faith to your child merely as a rigid checklist of "rules to follow"?

Context

When teaching our children to pray, worship, and obey, we often frame it as: "You must do this to be a good child." However, the wedding garment in today's passage was not a checklist. It was a posture of reverence—honoring the King as truly King.

Scripture Link

The issue with the guest lacking a wedding garment was not that he was ignorant of the rules. His heart simply lacked honor for the One who invited him. Above all outward behaviors, our children need to see a heart that truly treasures God.

Confession

"Help me to be a parent who displays a genuine heart toward God rather than merely enforcing religious rules."

Prayer Topic

That our children may learn to embrace God's invitation with joy from an early age, guided by parents who model that posture first.

4Parents of Adolescents and Older

Question

As you watch your child's spiritual journey, are you attempting to judge their "wedding garment" by your own human standards?

Context

As our children mature, parents are easily tempted to measure the depth of their faith by outward signs. Church attendance, Bible reading, and subtle changes in attitude often weigh heavily on our minds. Yet the true depth of that child's faith belongs to a sacred realm known only between God and them.

Scripture Link

"Many are called, but few are chosen" does not place a measuring stick into our hands to evaluate one another. Instead, it calls us to examine ourselves first. We must be vigilant lest our genuine concern for our children turns into harsh judgment.

Confession

"Enable me not to be a parent who sits in judgment over my child, but one who kneels before God in earnest prayer alongside them."

Prayer Topic

That our children may grow into a mature faith, responding earnestly and personally before God's divine invitation.

5Single Adults

Question

Are you putting off your response to God, telling yourself you will practice faithful living "someday when circumstances stabilize"?

Context

With major life transitions like marriage, career paths, and workplace settlements still unresolved, it is easy to defer spiritual commitment, thinking, "I'll focus on faith once I have some breathing room." However, the wedding garment was never something to be prepared in an uncertain future; it was an urgent response required in the present moment.

Scripture Link

The problem of the man without a wedding garment was not a lack of time. He had ample time and opportunity, yet he chose not to act. The present moment and location where you stand right now is already the place of standing before God.

Confession

"Not on some distant day in the future, but right here and now, make me someone who responds worthily before God."

Prayer Topic

May there be a resolute step of faith to respond sincerely to God's calling right from the present place in life.
